Road trip through the Pyrenees in France

Our project was simple: to go from Catalonia to the Basque country, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, along the Pyrenees.

Catalonia and the “Land of the Cathars”

Our trip began in the Perpignan region of French Catalonia, also known as Roussillon. After a day of beach and swimming, of no particular interest to you, our readers, we headed inland. We mainly explored the Têt Valley and the Corbières Mountains, which straddles the departments of Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales.

The Orgues of Ille-sur-Têt

At the entrance to the Orgues of Ille-sur-Têt site, right next to the ticket office, there is a large parking lot for campervans and motorhomes. This is where we spent the night. It was busy, but everyone was respectful and the noise didn’t bother us. The next day we were there to visit the site as soon as it was open to the public.

Along a signposted path, visitors can admire 4-million-year-old columns of sedimentary rock known as “fairy chimneys.” And it’s true that this landscape takes us out of reality and into a marvelous universe. It’s…
